Toothpaste Drama

A while back I posted that I really like this toothpaste, Crest Pro-Health. And I did, I used two whole tubes of it. Then I read some stuff late last week about how the Pro-Health rinse turns people’s teeth brown. Ew! Fortunately I don’t use the rinse. Unfortunately I started reading a bunch of nasty stuff about the toothpaste too, like these reviews on Amazon.

I was a bit grossed out, to say the least. I also realized that I’ve been noticing some of these strange symptoms (the slimey feeling, numbness, etc.) but hadn’t really connected it to the toothpaste. In a syllable: ugh.

So to make a long, boring, dental story short – I’ve stopped using the Pro-Health. I threw away what was left of my last tube and started some Sensodyne ProNamel. So far it’s OK – I like that it’s for sensitive teeth (mine always have been). I don’t like the mint flavor, but not many toothpastes seem to come in cinnamon anymore. Also it seems very runny, but I think that’s just because I was used to the thick, gritty consistency of the Pro-Health.

I am due to go back to the dentist in April; we’ll see what she says (she originally recommended the Pro-Health to me). Overall my teeth are doing so much better since all the major restorative work that I had in 2006-2007; which toothpaste I use probably doesn’t have all that much effect, but who knows?

Also, this is hilarious to me:

teeth and talk

Apparently Amazon assumes if you need toothpaste, you also need a new phone. I have no idea how these items tie together, other than both are somewhat related to your mouth.

  • I find it an awesome coincidence that, of all the commenter’s I clicked over from Better Now (your comment was great, btw), it was yours. Although it’s Crest Vivid White Night I’ve been using for the past couple weeks, and not Pro-Health, I was JUST complaining to a friend last night that something was making my teeth turn brown. I blamed it on the new tea I’ve been drinking (which still could be the culprit), but this makes total sense!!! I’m gonna cut the Crest out starting tonight and see if it makes any difference…brown teeth, so embarrassing!

  • OMG! I hope you can resolve it. I just read the other day that now Crest may actually pay for some victims to get professional cleaning. They may be backing away from that now. I also read a note on their website in the FAQs about the rinse which I found scary (of course it’s not there anymore): when users asked about the brown staining that the rinse seemed to cause, Crest recommended they use the toothpaste AS WELL! They said it was “whitening.” Unbelievable.

Companies should never underestimate the power of consumer word of mouth (no pun intended). Last week I was in Target with my friend, buying my new toothpaste. We went to the aisle where the rinse is so I could show her which Crest stuff to stay away from. Some other people (a mom and her teenagers I think) had just taken a bottle of the nasty Crest stuff off the shelf and put it in their cart. They overheard me explaining to my friend about the staining and Crest’s poor response so far. As we walked away I saw them quietly taking the Pro-Health Rinse out of their cart and putting it back on the shelf!
