Britney
I read a very good post on Dooce today about the whole Britney Spears debacle. That’s what it really is at this point – a debacle, a fiasco, a tragedy. When she drove with Sean Preston on her lap instead of in his car seat, we clucked our tongues and smugly said “Well, good!” when CPS paid her a little visit. But what she’s gone through since, the hard partying with two little innocent boys at home, well…it’s starting to seem like a real cry for help. I agree with Heather, who feels that Britney has some kind of post-partum depression or similar condition, and is partying to self-medicate. It’s easy enough to say that “it’s none of our business,” but Britney seems intent on making it everyone’s business, in the most public way possible.
Let’s face it, Britney was thrust into fame (and money) at a very young age, she was obviously very immature and poorly equipped to handle it, and unfortunately, she doesn’t seem to have a trusted family member or other advisor who can help her with that. She’s a bit trailer-trash at heart, with the under-developed social skills and common sense of a person separated from a good upbringing a little too soon. Brit is 25; just contrast her behavior with other young women of a similar age who have become celebrities: Natalie Portman, Jennifer Hudson, America Ferrera, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Reese Witherspoon, Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert, Christina Aguilera. Heck, can you imagine Natalie Portman flashing her privates getting out of a limo, slightly drunk? I don’t think she even goes to bars; if she does, her people do a good job of keeping it quiet. And yes, there are some messes out there too (Lindsay Lohan, I’m looking at you), but for the most part they’re not having babies and dragging them into their mess with them.
So yeah, I think Britney’s story is turning tragic, and sad, and pathetic. And if she doesn’t want to end up like another tragically pathetic young mother who’s all over the news- Anna Nicole Smith – she needs help. I, like Heather at Dooce, don’t have it in my to make fun of Britney at this point. I’m actually worried about her kids.
My God, who thought that K-Fed would ever seem like a better parent?
