Abba – Fernando
This has always been one of my favorite Abba songs. Who knew a song about two grizzly veterans reminiscing about the Mexican Revolution (apparently) could be so catchy? Now, thanks to Wikipedia, I also know that the original, Swedish lyrics to the song were quite different, with the narrator consoling “Fernando” on the loss of his “great love.”
Though I loved this song long before it was used in the film “Muriel’s Wedding,” its appearance in that film is great. Muriel returns home from the vacation she has illicitly purchased with what basically amounts to her mother’s life savings. She realizes her family is onto her, and she’s about to face some tough questions; then “Fernando” swells as she sneaks back out of the house and gets in a taxi, headed to Melbourne.
