Leslie Stahl’s earrings

Leslie Stahl’s earrings are making me crazy. Leslie (or her stylist) has apparently decided that her signature look is large, chunky stone earrings that perfectly match whatever she is wearing. Blue blazer with black turtleneck? Blue and black “quartz” looking earrings. She does this ALL THE TIME and it’s making me insane. Of course I couldn’t find any really good pictures of this on the Internets to illustrate, though here are a few (click on image to see larger):

Leslie Evidence 1

Leslie Evidence 2

If you watch an episode of “60 Minutes” where Leslie is doing a story, you’ll notice it immediately. These earrings are a vile offense to fashion and here’s why:

- The whole “matchy-matchy” aspect is so lame. It’s like Garanimals for jewelry. Everyone (well, everyone with taste) knows you’re never supposed to match everything.

- The earrings themselves are all incredibly ugly, like giant rocks that Wilma Flintstone might wear on a night out on the town.

Horrible, horrible, horrible. Those earrings are all I can think about lately when I’m trying to fall asleep at night. Damn you, Leslie Stahl (or Leslie Stahl’s stylist)!

  • Thank you! I am watching 60 Minutes right now and it has driven me crazy for so long, I finally decided to look and see if it was just me. They make me crazy and they are like she is making them to match her outfits or something. I can’t even focus on her stories anymore because I am consumed with her earrings. My boyfriend thinks I am insane!

  • Ha ha! The first time I mentioned it to my husband, he also thought I was insane. Then he really watched and admitted I was right. Those earrings are way too “matchy-matchy” and ugly to boot!

  • OMG her earrings are SOOOOO horrible they are not even funny! They’re just terrible. She probably pays good money too for those ugly things, and when she can afford to buy nice ones OMG.

  • this is too funny…i found your blog is because i googled LS’s earrings. I love them and was hoping to find out where she shops.

    Comment by Kiki — October 21, 2008 @ 8:33 pm

  • Well, to each his own I guess. :-) I have no idea where she shops but I bet you could find a lot of similar earrings in semi-precious gemstones on Etsy.com.

The earrings just distract me too much now. Whenever she’s on TV, all I can do is stare at her dang earrings.

  • I agree with Kiki. I too googled “Leslie Stahl’s earrings” to see where I can get them. I think they’re smart looking.

  • Please find out where Leslie Stahl gets those ugly earrings and let me know.

    Comment by Michelle — November 2, 2008 @ 8:03 pm

  • Wow, is Leslie just lately wearing some cuter earrings that I don’t know about? I’m going to have to specifically try to catch her on 60 Minutes and see what’s up.

  • Wow! I am glad that I am not the only one who googled this strange matchy-matchy phenomenon. I am truly sorry Ms. Stahl I do not like them and wish that you would let that fashion statement go. It may have worked well in the 80′s but we all must move on. Please…

  • I love alesley Stahl earrings. where can I buy them?

    Comment by Judy — December 7, 2008 @ 10:20 pm

  • OMG, this is SO validating, I knew I couldn’t be the only one! They are SO AWFUL!

Well, it’s not the earrings themselves, (they aren’t great) but the matchy-matchy factor is just off the charts. She seems to have a set in every imaginable color combination. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are some sort of a mix and match, changeable set. (wearing red? pop in the red stone! green jacket? pop in the green stone…)

I am surprised the producers let this slide, it’s the same stupid earrings every week. This lazy accessorising is ridiculous and distracting!

    Y U C K !

  • I can’t believe people hate the earrings. I love them and want to know where she gets them.

  • Recently some more fans of Leslie’s strange earrings have stepped forward. Last weekend, I watched 60 Minutes and took the opportunity to really have a gander at ol’ Leslie. I have to say – her earring choices have been improving. They’re still too big and distracting, and when they perfectly match (in color) whatever she’s wearing, it’s very gauche. But the ones she was wearing on 3/8 were not that bad. Maybe her stylist is paying attention?

  • I love her earrings. I think they are so cool looking.

  • I’m glad others have noticed this. I mentioned it to my husband, and he said \I bet you can \google\ it and find out what others are saying.\ And, yes, so validating!!

I SOO agree..these earrings are tacky beyond belief. I also agree they must be \pop outs\ with various colors. Where, but a tag sale, could you find so many of these that are exactly alike, with different colors in the middle. They are obviously a \man made\ material…so maybe someone makes them for her?

I wonder if they buy blouses according to the colors they have–or vice versa?

Perhaps we could photo shop some small diamond studs on a picture of her…so she could see how much better it is..and how much less effort would be needed when she gets dressed.

  • Leslie, hope you or your staff see this. You are creating a fashion statement. Love your earrings! Please let us all know the website where we can purchase them. I’m sure the jewelry company will be more than happy to sell thousands of pairs of these earrings. Maybe they should be named “Leslie’s fashion choice”.
By the way, I never miss your news segments every week on “60 Minutes”.

    Comment by Joanne — April 26, 2009 @ 9:04 pm

  • Leslie – I think your earrings are quite elegant & would love to know where to purchase same.

    Comment by Shellie — May 29, 2009 @ 9:25 am

  • I love the style of earrings … the color matchy matchy thing may be a bit much … does anyone know how to describe the style?

    Comment by Linda — June 9, 2009 @ 12:19 pm

  • I love the earrings. I would like to start a business line of costume earrings using Leslie’s name.

    Comment by Judy Robbins — June 29, 2009 @ 7:32 pm

  • Leslie, honey, I have been watching your 60 Minutes segments for age dying to know where you got your earrings with the light blue bottoms. I LOVE them. What kind of gem are they?

To all the women who wrote below that they didn’t like them: ok, no problem. I’m 57 and I know what I like. I don’t care what you or anyone thinks. Y’all are still in the ‘cares’ category, so go girls. Do what you want. Just let the rest of us alone.
